In Reggae music there is a very distinctive sound. Reggae was formed in Jamaica in the 1960s and formed more specifically in the city of Kingston. There are many different instruments and lyrics performed in Reggae music. Much of Reggae music is politically geared to wars and other government problems. Some other lyrics in the songs were about lost love and worshipping Ja. Other songs also talked more in depth about Rastafarianism.

Besides lyrics, instruments Reggae is generally played in swing time. One of the most important instruments is drums and percussion. A drum kit is generally used but a snare drum and tom toms can be used as well. Other percussion instruments include, cowbells, claves, and shakers. A bass guitar and other guitars often play a prominent role in Reggae music. Keyboards are also used to add sounds and more character to many different Reggae sounds. Horns are also widely used in Reggae music and helps to add to that traditional Reggae sound. In some albums and in concerts, synthesizers are used to replace the sounds of horns. This makes it easier to control certain sounds.

All of Reggae is very popular and has a very classical sound. Reggae is not without its controversies though. There has been many issues with songs that are anti gay and songs that have political overtones. In 2007 many members of Reggae signed to the Reggae Compassion Act which states that they will no longer have explicit hatred lyrics in their songs. Some of the members of Reggae did not sign up for the act and there is a movement to try again to get these artists to sign up for the act.
