Reggae Music: Beenie Man
Bennie Man is a popular Jamaican reggae singer. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1973. He started with music at the young age of five. In 1981 he won he Tastee Talent contest. He then met a DJ who introduced him to sound system operators. His first sing was called Too Fancy. His debut album is The Invincible Beenie Man: The Ten Year Old Wonder. In 1984 Beenie Man decided to put his music career on hold so that he could finish school and travel to the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.
In 1990 Beenie Man made a comeback. He was featured at Reggae Sunsplash where a rivalry began with Bounty Killer. In 1998 his career took off internationally. He performed many different songs including songs with the singer Mya and Wyclef Jean. In 2000 he and Wyclef Jean helped to produce the actor Stephen Seagals debut album. In 2002 he had a great hit with the artist Janet Jackson, rising him to international stardom. Beenie Mans latest album is entitled The Legend Returns. Beenie Man like many other artists is not without controversy. One of his first controversies was when he played at a show that welcomed Nelson Mandela to Jamaica. The song was noted as inappropriate. The fallout from this controversy caused Beenie Man to leave Jamaica for a year. Another controversy that he has been involved in is the concern over some of his lyrics. Many of his songs are anti gay which upset many people. He was reported to have signed an agreement stating that he would no longer use anti gay lyrics but later in 2007 he said that he did not sign the act. He has been stated as saying that he does not support the gay lifestyle and has lost several contracts due to the violent nature of his songs.
