Ska is one of the earliest forms of Reggae music. Ska was very popular in the early 1950s and is still quite popular today. Many people like to use Ska music as a great form of dancing. Ska brought in elements from Caribbean mento, Calypso, American Jazz and the Blues. There are different theories as to how Ska got its name. Ernest Ranglin said that the term was come up with by the skat sound that was played from scratching guitar strings. Others said that Cluet Johnson instructed Ranglin to play ska ska ska and one other theory is that Bryon Lee coined the name. Whoever did, this form of Jamaican reggae became known as Ska and is still known as that today.

There are many different instruments used in Ska. Some of the instruments used in Ska are, organ, piano, drums, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, guitar, and base guitar. All these instruments added with vocals gave a great sound to the Ska music. Ska music has a very unique sound to it and many people have enjoyed it throughout the years. Ska music had three waves of popularity. The first wave was in the 1950s, the second wave was in the 1970s and the third wave was in the 1980s. By the 1990s Ska gained increasing popularity all over the world.

There are many people that perform Ska. One of the earliest known artists, who is also thought of as creating Ska was Prince Buster created the musical sound. Other artists include Edward Seaga, The Skatalites, Bryon Lee and the Dragonaires, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. All of these made up a very popular Ska culture.
