Reggae Music: Black Uhuru
Black Uhuru is a reggae music group. This group was formed in 1972 and this group has won the first Grammy award for Best Reggae Album. This award was given to Black Uhuru in 1985 increasing the bands popularity. You may wonder where the name Uhuru came from. Uhuru is a Swahili name meaning freedom.
The group formed in Kingston Jamaica. Their first ever release was a cover version of Romancing to the Folk Song by Curtis Mayfield. The song did not succeed as well as they hoped and the band at first split up. Later they formed a new version of the band releasing the debut album entitled Love Crisis which was released in 1977. In the following years Black Uhuru had several different band members many changing during the year. They did release many songs, some of which were featured on the UK music charts. Some of their songs were, Red, Chill Out, Guess Whos Coming For Dinner, Mystical Truth Dub, Tear It Up, Unification, Dynasty, Now, Iron Storm, Mythical Truth, Love Crisis, and Reggae Greats. Many of these songs were played all over the world including the United States and United Kingdom.
In 2008 Duckie Simpson came back to Black Uhuru and they released a album entitled As the World Turns. This album had guest appearances with many different Latin superstars and gained popularity. In the same year a 25th Anniversary Addition DVD set was released honoring their Live in London concert.
