Roots reggae is a popular sub genre of Reggae. This form of Reggae associates more with the religion of Rastafarianism. The songs are more geared toward Jah the Rastafarian Godhead. It is also associated with poorer Jamaican people, such as those that live in the ghetto. Many songs talk about many different things including religion, Rastafarian, political views, spiritual, and black pride. There are several different instruments used in this type of music as well. Some of the instruments include, guitar, drums, bass, organ, and percussion.

While Roots reggae had its starts deep in Jamaica it broke out and went onto Europe where it gained increased popularity in the 1970s. This music became popular with youths that were left-wing. In Europe during this time a lot of black, white and mixed roots bands were formed, adding to the Roots reggae music. Roots Reggae eventually made its way to the United States. Most of the Roots music made its way during the mass immigration to New York. Reggae music was then brought into New York adding to the great soundscape of New York City and the United States.
